Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? You’ll find answers to all our most common queries — both general and product-specific below.

General FAQs

  • How do I choose what shade product is right for me?

The right shade solution depends on your space, style, and budget. Awnings are a great option if you want retractable shade for decks and patios. Shade sails suit larger or irregular areas and create a striking architectural look. Outdoor screens are ideal when privacy or wind protection is important, while the Wave Shade provides flexible coverage with a dramatic design that retracts when not in use. When choosing, consider how much shade you need, the look you want to achieve, and your budget, then select the product that best balances aesthetics, function, and value.

  • Why buy custom shade products when I can buy ready made?

Made-to-measure shade products are designed to fit your space perfectly, giving you better coverage, tension, and long-term performance. Ready-made options may be cheaper upfront but can compromise on fit, strength, and durability. A custom product ensures you get the right size, shape, and finish for your home or business, built to last and look good for years to come.

  • Can my custom shade product be any size?

All of our shade products are made to your measure within the maximum sizes recommended by the manufacturer for strength and performance. For example, awnings and outdoor screens each have specific maximum width and extension limits, while shade sails must be designed with curves and slopes for stability. In the online ordering process, you’ll be able to choose from a range of size options but if you need something unique, we’re always happy to discuss custom requirements.

  • Do I need council consent for installing a shade structure?

Most shade products do not require council consent. Smaller structures such as awnings, outdoor screens, and standard sails can generally be installed without approval. However, very large sails or posts over certain heights may fall under local building rules. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to check with your local council before installing.

  • How long does installation usually take?

Installation can take anywhere between a few hours up to two days depending on the product and environment. Most shade products can be installed within a day or two, whether you take the DIY approach or work with a local builder or handyman. To make things easier, we provide full installation guides for all our products, available to download directly from our website.

  • What colours are available?

We offer a wide range of colours to suit different styles, from timeless neutrals through to bold, modern shades. The exact options vary by product, and fabric swatches are included in our product guides so you can see the full palette before choosing. This makes it easy to find a colour that works with your space, whether you want your shade to blend in or stand out as a design feature.

  • How long will my shade product last?

All of our shade solutions are designed to provide many years of reliable use in New Zealand’s outdoor conditions. The lifespan will depend on factors such as exposure to sun and wind, how well the product is cared for, and whether it is stored during extreme weather. With regular maintenance and correct use, most shade products will comfortably last well beyond their warranty period.

  • Are shade products waterproof?

Shade fabrics are primarily designed for UV protection and cooling shade. Most will shed light rain but are not fully waterproof. If all-weather shelter is important, we can recommend the best product and fabric type to suit your needs.

  • Can my shade be removed in winter?

Sails and Wave Shades can be easily removed and stored if not in use during winter or storms. Awnings and umbrellas are designed to remain in place year-round, but they should always be retracted in strong winds.

  • What maintenance is required?

Most shade products require only simple care to keep them looking good and performing well, such as occasional cleaning and checking that fittings remain secure. The exact maintenance needs can vary depending on the type of product and fabric. For full details and step-by-step instructions, please refer to the installation and maintenance guides provided with each product.

  • Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. All of our shade products come with comprehensive warranties that cover both the fabric and the frame or hardware. Warranty periods vary depending on the product and material, and all details are clearly listed on each product pages so you can review them before purchasing.

  • Do you offer shipping?

Yes. All orders over $100 include free shipping New Zealand–wide to residential, non-rural addresses. Lead times vary depending on the product — custom-made items take a little longer as they are manufactured to your exact specifications. For most custom products, the typical lead time is around 4 weeks before dispatch.

Retractable Awnings FAQs

  • What is the benefit of an awning in New Zealand?

A retractable awning provides instant shade and UV protection, helping to cool outdoor areas and reduce indoor heat gain. It’s a flexible alternative to fixed structures, giving you the option to enjoy shade when you need it and retract it when you don’t. Awnings are ideal for decks, patios, and windows where sun protection is essential in New Zealand’s strong climate.

  • Do retractable awnings handle strong winds and rain?

Awnings are designed for shade and light weather protection only. They must always be retracted in strong winds or storms. When installed with the required minimum pitch of 12–15°, they can shed light rain, but they are not intended as a rain shelter.

  • Can I adjust the pitch of my awning?

Yes. The Ellipse Monobloc awning has the option of adjustable pitch brackets, allowing you to change the angle of the canopy. This makes it easier to block low morning or afternoon sun and ensures correct water run-off.

  • Are awnings waterproof?

No. The fabric is primarily designed for UV protection. It is water-resistant and will shed light rain if the awning is set at the correct pitch, but it is not fully waterproof.

  • How long will an awning last in New Zealand?

In New Zealand’s harsh UV conditions a custom awning using Docril Acrylic Canvas can last many years. Docril fabric carries a 10-year UV warranty, and the frame and components are covered by a 5-year warranty. With regular cleaning and by retracting the awning in bad weather, you can expect it to last well beyond its warranty period.

  • What materials are awnings made from?

The Ellipse Monobloc uses powder-coated aluminium hardware (available in White, Grey, or Textured Black), stainless steel components, and Docril Acrylic Canvas. These materials are chosen for durability, colourfastness, and performance in New Zealand conditions.

  • What are the maximum sizes available for retractable awnings?

The Ellipse Monobloc can be manufactured up to 6.0m wide with a 4.0m projection. The minimum size is 3m wide x 1.5m projection.

  • What fabric options do you offer, and how do they perform in NZ conditions?

This awning is made with Docril Acrylic Canvas. Docril is fade-resistant, blocks harmful UV rays, and is available in a curated colour range. It comes with a 10-year UV warranty and is specifically designed for performance in New Zealand’s outdoor conditions.

  • What automation options are available (remotes, sensors, smart integration)?

Awnings can be operated manually with a crank handle or automated with a motor. The Ellipse Monobloc uses a 240V Alpha tubular motor, controlled by a Navigator remote. A wind sensor can be added for safety, which will automatically retract the awning in strong gusts. Motorised awnings must be connected by a qualified electrician.

Outdoor Screens FAQs

  • What’s the difference between Omni Lite, Omni Guide, and Omni Channel screens?

    • Omni Lite – anchors to the ground when lowered, a simple and cost-effective system.
    • Omni Guide – uses stainless steel wire guides, allowing the screen to stop securely at any height.
    • Omni Channel – runs within aluminium side channels for maximum stability, ideal for windy locations or when a tighter seal is needed.
  • Can outdoor screens be locked at any height?

Yes, but it depends on the model. Omni Guide can stop and hold at any point along the guide wires. Omni Channel offers similar flexibility, with the fabric held securely inside the side channels. Omni Lite anchors at the bottom only.

  • What fabric options are available?

    • Shadeview Mesh Urban – This high quality fabric comes as standard, with 16 designer colours, blocks up to 95% of UV, reduces heat and glare, breathable, mildew resistant, fire retardant, and backed by a 10-year UV warranty.
    • Clear PVC – option provides weather protection and clear views, helps retain warmth, and is backed by a 2-year warranty.
  • Are the screens weatherproof?

Screens provide excellent protection from sun, wind, and light rain. Mesh reduces UV and heat while still allowing airflow, while clear PVC offers more complete weather and wind protection. They are not designed to replace a solid wall.

  • How do I clean and maintain outdoor screens?

Screens require simple care: rinse regularly with fresh water, wash gently with mild soap if needed, and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning. Do not store the screen when wet for long periods. Refer to the maintenance guide supplied with your product for full instructions.

  • What are the benefits of outdoor screens?

Outdoor screens extend the usability of decks, patios, and balconies by blocking wind, glare, and UV while adding privacy. They also help protect furniture from fading and can reduce heat inside the home.

  • Can outdoor screens be used for privacy as well as shade?

Yes. Mesh fabrics provide privacy by filtering outside views while still allowing you to see out. Clear PVC keeps views open but is not designed for privacy.

  • How do outdoor screens operate?

Screens are operated manually with a crank handle, available in several lengths to suit your installation height. The drive can be positioned on either side.

  • Can outdoor screens be motorised?

Yes. However, at this stage we only offer the manual option through our website. If you are interested in motorisation, please email us at

  • Which way does the fabric roll – inside or outside?

The roll direction can be configured at installation, either to the inside or the outside, depending on your preference and site requirements.

  • What sizes are available for outdoor screens?

Custom sizes are available from 500mm wide x 500mm drop up to 4500mm wide x 3000mm drop, depending on the model and fabric choice.

  • What hardware colours are available?

Standard hardware colours are Black, White, and Silver Pearl.

  • Should I get a pelmet for my screen?

A 135mm square pelmet is available as an option. While not essential, it is recommended as it protects the screen fabric and hardware when rolled away, extending its life and keeping it cleaner.

  • How do the mesh and PVC fabric options perform differently?

    • Mesh – blocks up to 95% UV, reduces glare and heat, maintains airflow, and offers privacy.
    • Clear PVC – gives clear views, blocks wind and rain, helps retain warmth, but does not allow airflow.
  • How long will outdoor screens last?

With proper care, Shadeview Mesh is designed to last 10 years or more under New Zealand conditions, while Clear PVC has a shorter expected lifespan of several years, depending on exposure.

  • What warranty is provided with outdoor screens?

    • Shadeview Mesh – 10-year UV warranty
    • Clear PVC – 1-year warranty
    • Screen components and fabrication – 2-year warranty

Shade Sails FAQs

  • What are the benefits of a shade sail?

Shade sails are a stylish and practical way to provide large areas of shade. They reduce heat, block harmful UV rays, and create a modern architectural look that enhances outdoor spaces such as patios, pools, gardens, and playgrounds.

  • Why do shade sails have curved sides?

Shade sails are designed with curved edges (known as “catenary curves”) to ensure the fabric remains tight under tension. Straight edges would sag and flap, while curves create strength and stability.

  • Can shade sails be made in any shape or size?

Shade sails are custom-made to fit your space, but they must follow certain design rules for safety and performance. Most sails are designed with three or four fixing points, as this ensures proper tension and stability. Irregular shapes can be made, but these require careful planning — if you’re interested in something more bespoke please email us at

  • What fabric is used for shade sails?

We use Extrablock 330 HDPE fabric. It is a commercial-grade knitted shade cloth that provides up to 98% UV protection, excellent dimensional stability, and long-lasting durability in New Zealand’s climate.

  • What are webbing edges on a shade sail?

Webbing edges are reinforced fabric bands sewn into the perimeter of the shade sail. Unlike wire-edged sails, webbing edges distribute tension evenly along the sides, helping the sail stay tight and stable over time. This design also prevents stretching and reduces the risk of sagging. With stainless steel D-rings stitched into each corner, the webbing edge makes installation stronger and more reliable — ensuring your sail looks better and lasts longer.

  • How do I measure for a shade sail?

The sail is made to fit between fixing points (such as posts or walls). Always measure from fixing point to fixing point, allowing space for the hardware. Our guides explain how to plan and measure for best results.

  • What hardware is supplied with a shade sail?

Shade sails come with stainless steel fittings such as turnbuckles, shackles, and D-rings, which are designed to tension the fabric securely. Additional posts or footings may be required depending on your site.

  • Are shade sails waterproof?

No. Shade sails are made from breathable mesh fabric, which allows air to circulate and prevents heat build-up. This means they provide excellent UV protection and cooling shade, but they are not waterproof.

  • How long will a shade sail last?

With correct installation and care, a custom shade sail can last many years. Extrablock 330 fabric carries a 10-year UV warranty, and the reinforced webbing edges and stainless steel hardware are designed for long-term durability.

  • What colours are available for shade sails?

Extrablock 330 is available in a wide range of colours, from modern neutrals through to bold feature tones. Colour swatches are included in the product guide and can be supplied on request.

  • Do shade sails need maintenance?

Yes. Shade sails should be cleaned periodically with fresh water and mild detergent, and hardware should be checked for tension. Sails can also be removed and stored over winter or during storms to extend their life.

  • Do I need a slope or fall in my sail?

Yes. A minimum slope of 20% is recommended to ensure water runs off and to keep the sail stable. Flat sails are not recommended, as they may sag or collect water.

  • What warranty is provided with shade sails?

    • Extrablock 330 Fabric – 10-year UV warranty
    • Stainless Steel Hardware – durable, corrosion-resistant fittings
    • Workmanship – all custom sails are covered under our workmanship guarantee

Wave Shade

  • What is a Wave Shade?

A Wave Shade is a retractable fabric canopy system designed to run on stainless steel cables, creating an elegant “wave” effect. It provides flexible shade that can be extended when needed and retracted when you want more sun.

  • How does a Wave Shade operate?

    There are two operation options:

    • Pole retraction – a simple hook-and-pole method that opens or closes the canopy fully.
    • Cord retraction – a pulley and cord system that allows you to stop the shade at any position.
  • What sizes are available?

A single Wave Shade unit can cover up to 3m wide x 5m long (15m²). Multiple units can be installed side by side to cover larger areas.

  • What drop options are available?

The Wave Shade can be supplied with different drops to suit your structure:

    • Standard drop – 450mm
    • Reduced drop – 368mm (useful where there are doors, windows, or height restrictions)
  • What are “billows” in a Wave Shade?

Billows are the fabric curves that create the wave effect. They can be configured as shallow, medium (standard), or deep, depending on the look you want and how much fabric you prefer in the canopy.

  • What fabric is used for the Wave Shade?

Wave Shade canopies are made from Serge Ferrari Soltis Lounge 96, a commercial-grade PVC-coated mesh. It provides up to 85% UV protection, excellent tear resistance, and long-term durability, with a 5-year warranty.

  • Can a Wave Shade be stopped part way?

Yes — if you choose the cord retraction system, the canopy can be locked off at any point. With the pole retraction system, the canopy can only be fully opened or fully closed.

  • Can a Wave Shade be installed in exposed areas?

Yes, but as with all fabric shade systems, it should be retracted in very high winds. The stainless steel cables and anodised aluminium spars provide strength, while the fabric is engineered to resist UV and weather.

  • What hardware is used?

Wave Shade systems are built with anodised aluminium spars, stainless steel fixings, and tensioned stainless steel cables. This ensures long life and performance in New Zealand’s conditions.

  • How long will a Wave Shade last?

With correct care, Wave Shades provide many years of reliable shade. The Soltis Lounge 96 fabric has a 5-year warranty, while the aluminium and stainless steel components are designed for long-term use.

  • What colours are available?

Soltis Lounge 96 fabric comes in a wide range of modern colours. Swatches are available in the product guide or on request.

  • What warranty is provided with Wave Shade?

    • Fabric (Soltis Lounge 96): 5 years
    • Workmanship: 12 months
    • Components (aluminium, stainless steel): covered under workmanship warranty
